HydroPol is a combination pharmaceutical product typically formulated as an otic or ophthalmic suspension. It contains **hydrocortisone**, a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and antipruritic properties, and **polymyxin B sulfate**, a polypeptide antibiotic effective against Gram-negative bacteria, particularly *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. The mechanism of action involves hydrocortisone binding to cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors, leading to the inhibition of inflammatory mediators and the reduction of edema and capillary permeability. Polymyxin B acts by binding to phospholipids in the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane, disrupting its integrity and causing leakage of intracellular components, which results in bactericidal activity. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the external auditory canal (otitis externa) or ocular structures when a steroid is also required to manage inflammation.
