It combines **hydrocortisone**, a glucocorticoid receptor agonist that suppresses ocular inflammation, with **neomycin**, **polymyxin B**, and **bacitracin**, antibacterial agents that broaden topical coverage against susceptible bacterial eye pathogens by inhibiting ribosomal protein synthesis, disrupting the bacterial outer membrane, and inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, respectively. The ointment has been used for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where bacterial infection is present or there is risk of infection, including inflammatory conditions of the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe, chronic anterior uveitis, and corneal injury from chemical, radiation, or thermal burns or foreign body penetration.
