hydrocortisone + sodium bituminosulfonate

Ichthocortin is a topical dermatological combination therapy developed by Ichthyol-Gesellschaft Cordes Hermanni & Co. It is formulated with hydrocortisone acetate, a mild (Class I) corticosteroid, and sodium bituminosulfonate (pale Ichthyol). Hydrocortisone provides anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and antipruritic effects by acting as an agonist at the glucocorticoid receptor, thereby suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators. Sodium bituminosulfonate, a substance derived from sulfur-rich oil shale, complements this action with its own anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-seborrheic properties, which are thought to involve the inhibition of inflammatory mediator release and leukotriene synthesis. Ichthocortin is primarily indicated for the treatment of inflammatory, non-infectious skin conditions such as eczema and various forms of dermatitis where a low-potency corticosteroid is appropriate.
