Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydrocortisone acetate + neomycin sulfate + polymyxin b sulfate is a marketed topical combination drug composed of a corticosteroid and two antibacterial small molecules. In the cream formulation marketed as **Cortisporin**, hydrocortisone acetate 0.5% provides local anti-inflammatory activity through glucocorticoid receptor agonism, while neomycin sulfate and polymyxin b sulfate provide broad topical antibacterial coverage against susceptible organisms, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria such as *Staphylococcus aureus*, *Escherichia coli*, *Haemophilus influenzae*, *Klebsiella/Enterobacter* species, *Neisseria* species, and *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. It is used primarily for corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses with secondary infection or risk of infection, and is an approved, marketed pharmaceutical available in topical cream form; related neomycin/polymyxin/hydrocortisone products also exist in otic and ophthalmic presentations, but those are distinct formulations from the exact hydrocortisone acetate cream combination.
