Overview

Hydromorphone + naltrexone is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents. Hydromorphone is a potent opioid analgesic used for the management of moderate-to-severe acute and chronic pain, acting primarily as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor to produce analgesia[4]. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist that competitively binds to mu-, kappa-, and delta-opioid receptors, with highest affinity for the mu receptor, thereby blocking or reversing the effects of opioids such as euphoria and respiratory depression[5][8]. When combined in a single formulation, naltrexone serves as an abuse-deterrent component; if the product is tampered with (e.g., crushed), naltrexone becomes bioavailable and counteracts hydromorphone’s opioid effects, reducing potential for misuse or abuse[6]. Such combinations have been developed to provide effective pain relief while minimizing risk of opioid abuse.
