hydroquinone + retinol

Hydroquinone + retinol is a topical combination therapy used for the treatment of melasma and photodamage. Hydroquinone is a skin-lightening agent that works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, thereby blocking the conversion of dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) to melanin. Retinol, a vitamin A derivative, functions as a precursor to retinoic acid, which binds to retinoic acid receptors (RARs) to modulate gene expression, increase epidermal cell turnover, and stimulate collagen synthesis. This combination is particularly effective in patients with Fitzpatrick Skin Types III-VI, where it addresses hyperpigmentation and improves skin texture and fine wrinkles.
