Hydroxychloroquine is a small molecule antimalarial and immunomodulatory drug from the 4-aminoquinoline class, originally developed to prevent and treat malaria. It is also widely used for autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), and rheumatoid arthritis. Hydroxychloroquine acts by killing malaria-causing organisms and modulating immune system activity, likely through inhibition of lysosomal activity, autophagy, and mTORC1-mediated cholesterol biosynthesis[1][4][5][6][8]. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol used primarily as an osmotic laxative or pharmaceutical excipient; it does not have direct pharmacological action relevant to the treatment indications of hydroxychloroquine[2]. The combination may be found in compounded oral liquid formulations for patients unable to swallow tablets.
