They are often compared or used as alternatives to each other, rather than being a single combination product. Hydroxyethyl starch is a synthetic colloid used for preventing shock following severe blood loss caused by trauma, surgery, or other issues. It's available in various formulations, with 6% HES 130/0.4 being a common version. HES may reduce capillary leakage and maintains blood volume for at least 6 hours after administration[3][8]. Albumin (typically 5% concentration) is a natural plasma protein that serves as an alternative colloid for volume replacement. It interacts with the endothelial glycocalyx, which appears to provide protective effects on the vascular barrier[1]. Both solutions are used in perioperative fluid management, hypovolemia treatment, and other clinical scenarios requiring plasma volume expansion[1][2][6].
