Overview

Toriron is a brand name used by Albia Biocare for formulations of progesterone and hydroxyprogesterone caproate, most notably Toriron-500, an injectable formulation of hydroxyprogesterone caproate. Hydroxyprogesterone caproate is a synthetic progestin that acts as an agonist of the progesterone receptor. It is primarily used in obstetrics to reduce the risk of preterm birth in pregnant women with a history of spontaneous preterm delivery, as well as for the treatment of various gynecological disorders such as amenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding. Hydroxyprogesterone caproate was originally developed by Schering AG and Squibb (now Bristol Myers Squibb) in the 1950s. While its FDA approval in the United States was withdrawn in 2023 due to efficacy concerns, it remains approved and marketed in other regions, including India.
