Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose + glycerin is a combination topical ophthalmic formulation classified as artificial tears. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), also known as hypromellose, is a cellulose-based viscosity-enhancing agent that forms a protective, lubricating film over the ocular surface to increase tear retention time. Glycerin serves as a humectant and demulcent, promoting water retention and moisturizing the cornea and conjunctiva. Together, these agents stabilize the tear film, reduce evaporation, and protect the ocular surface from irritation. This combination is widely used over-the-counter for the temporary relief of burning, irritation, and discomfort associated with dry eye syndrome or environmental exposure. In a clinical trial conducted at the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences (India), a pharmacy-prepared formulation of 0.5% HPMC and 0.3% glycerin was evaluated as the artificial tears comparator arm alongside standard medical therapy in patients with acute ocular chemical burns.
