Overview

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC, also known as hypromellose) combined with povidone is a multi-ingredient ophthalmic formulation primarily used as an artificial tear or ocular lubricant for the symptomatic treatment of dry eye disease. HPMC is a semi-synthetic, inert polymer that mimics natural tears by stabilizing and thickening the precorneal tear film, prolonging tear film breakup time, and providing lubrication to protect the corneal surface[1][2]. Povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone) acts as a water-soluble polymer that enhances viscosity and helps retain moisture on the ocular surface[4][6]. The combination improves corneal hydration and may help maintain physiological corneal density in patients with dry eye syndrome[1]. Both components are considered pharmacologically inert in this context; their primary mechanism is physical protection and lubrication rather than direct pharmacological action.
