Overview

Hydroxypropylcellulose + dextran is a combination of two polymer-based agents used primarily as ophthalmic lubricants and protectants. Hydroxypropylcellulose is a cellulose derivative that stabilizes and thickens the precorneal tear film, prolonging tear film breakup time and providing lubrication to relieve dryness and irritation in the eye[7]. Dextran, a polysaccharide, acts as an ocular lubricant by mimicking natural tears to temporarily relieve symptoms of dry eyes such as burning, itching, or foreign body sensation[6][8]. The combination is used for symptomatic treatment of dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca), ocular discomfort, minor irritations, or exposure-related dryness. Both components are considered inert with minimal systemic absorption when applied topically. The mechanism involves physical protection and moisture retention on the ocular surface rather than pharmacological receptor targeting.
