Overview
Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose + dextran is a combination ophthalmic medication used as artificial tears to relieve symptoms of dry eye and ocular irritation syndromes. The formulation contains two lubricants—hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (also known as hypromellose) and dextran 70—which synergistically form a lubricating, transparent film on the cornea. This film mimics natural tears by providing moisture, stabilizing the precorneal tear film, enhancing corneal wetting through physiological blending with existing tear components, and extending retention time on the ocular surface without increasing viscosity. The combination is indicated for temporary relief of burning and irritation due to dryness of the eye or exposure to wind or sun[1][2][8]. It does not treat underlying disease but provides symptomatic relief.
