Overview

Hyperbaric bupivacaine + sufentanil is a combination used for spinal (intrathecal) anesthesia, particularly in obstetric and surgical settings such as cesarean section, hip fracture repair, and urological procedures. Hyperbaric bupivacaine is a local anesthetic of the amide type that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve fibers, inhibiting nerve impulse transmission and producing sensory and motor block. Sufentanil is a potent lipophilic opioid agonist at the mu-opioid receptor; when added to intrathecal local anesthetics, it enhances analgesia by activating opioid receptors in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. The combination provides rapid onset and prolonged duration of anesthesia with improved intraoperative analgesia compared to local anesthetic alone. Common side effects include pruritus (itching), with no significant increase in hypotension or vomiting compared to monotherapy[1][2][4][6].
