Overview

Ibuprofen + arginine is a fixed-dose combination of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) ibuprofen and the amino acid L-arginine. Ibuprofen acts as a non-selective inhibitor of the enzymes cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which are essential for the biosynthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain, inflammation, and fever. The inclusion of arginine in the formulation creates a highly soluble salt (ibuprofen arginate), which facilitates more rapid absorption from the gastrointestinal tract compared to standard ibuprofen formulations, thereby providing a faster onset of analgesic relief. In clinical research conducted by Samsung Medical Center, this combination was evaluated for its effectiveness in treating muscle and joint pain in women during the menopausal transition (perimenopause), comparing its efficacy against oral contraceptives.
