Overview

Motrin + narcotic is a multimodal analgesic regimen developed by Cape Fear Valley Health System for the management of postoperative pain in adult outpatients. This intervention is not a single fixed-dose combination but a clinical protocol pairing 800 mg of ibuprofen (Motrin), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), with one of several opioid analgesics, including oxycodone/acetaminophen, hydrocodone/acetaminophen, hydromorphone, or tramadol. The regimen is currently being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT06495632) to compare the efficacy and feasibility of a fixed-schedule administration versus an as-needed (PRN) approach for moderate-to-severe pain following same-day surgery.
