ibuprofen + ondansetron

Ibuprofen + ondansetron is a combination drug regimen being evaluated by Hackensack Meridian Health for the management of side effects associated with medical abortion. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that acts by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis to alleviate pain and inflammation. Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that prevents nausea and vomiting by blocking serotonin receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and the chemoreceptor trigger zone. The combination is specifically studied as a prophylactic regimen to improve patient satisfaction and reduce the incidence of pain and nausea following misoprostol administration in patients undergoing medical abortion at less than 70 days of gestation.
