ibuprofen arginine + codeine is a fixed-dose combination analgesic developed by China Pharmaceutical University for the management of moderate to severe pain. It combines ibuprofen arginine, a salt form of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) ibuprofen, with the opioid analgesic codeine. The arginine salt is employed to enhance the solubility and absorption rate of ibuprofen, leading to a faster onset of action compared to standard ibuprofen formulations. Ibuprofen acts by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Codeine serves as a central analgesic by acting as an agonist at mu-opioid receptors. This combination leverages two distinct mechanisms of action to provide synergistic pain relief.
