Icosapent ethyl + statin refers to the **concurrent administration of icosapent ethyl (an ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid) with any statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor)** for the management of dyslipidemia, specifically to reduce elevated triglycerides and lower cardiovascular risk in adults with established or high risk of cardiovascular disease and elevated triglycerides despite statin therapy. Icosapent ethyl is a high-purity omega-3 fatty acid (EPA-derived) indicated as an adjunct to maximally tolerated statin therapy. The combination is based on evidence from large cardiovascular outcome studies (e.g., REDUCE-IT), showing additive benefits in reducing major adverse cardiovascular events. Statins act by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase to reduce cholesterol synthesis, while icosapent ethyl acts primarily by lowering hepatic VLDL-triglyceride synthesis/secretion and possibly through anti-inflammatory or plaque-stabilizing effects.
