Overview

Iferanserin (VEN 309) is a selective serotonin 5-HT2A receptor antagonist that was developed as a topical 0.5% ointment for the treatment of symptomatic internal hemorrhoids. The specific regimen 'iferanserin + placebo' refers to a treatment arm in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT01355874) where patients received active iferanserin ointment for the first 7 days of treatment, followed by an inactive placebo ointment for the subsequent 7 days. This sequential approach was designed to evaluate the drug's efficacy in achieving the cessation of bleeding and providing relief from itching and pain. Developed by Ventrus Biosciences, the program was ultimately terminated after the Phase 3 trial failed to demonstrate a significant clinical benefit over placebo in its primary endpoint of bleeding cessation.
