Overview

This combination therapy consists of imatinib, a small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor, and pegylated interferon alpha-2b, a biologic immunomodulatory agent. It was investigated by Uppsala University and the Nordic CML Study Group for the treatment of newly diagnosed chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Imatinib works by inhibiting the BCR-ABL fusion protein, the primary driver of CML, while pegylated interferon alpha-2b enhances the immune system's ability to target leukemic cells. A randomized phase 2 trial demonstrated that adding pegylated interferon alpha-2b to imatinib increased major molecular response rates compared to imatinib monotherapy, although a high percentage of patients discontinued the interferon component due to toxicity.
