imipenem + tigecycline

Imipenem + tigecycline is a combination of two broad-spectrum antibiotics used together in clinical practice, particularly for the treatment of severe or multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Imipenem is a carbapenem antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Tigecycline is a glycylcycline antibiotic (a derivative of minocycline) that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. This combination may be considered for complicated intra-abdominal infections or other serious hospital-acquired infections where multidrug resistance limits other options. Both drugs are administered intravenously and have activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, including some resistant strains.
