Overview

ID HBVv refers to a specific therapeutic regimen involving the intradermal (ID) administration of the Hepatitis B Virus vaccine (HBVv) Sci-B-Vac™ in combination with topical imiquimod. Sci-B-Vac is a recombinant, third-generation vaccine derived from mammalian cells that contains all three hepatitis B surface antigens (S, pre-S1, and pre-S2), offering a broader antigenic profile than conventional single-antigen vaccines. Imiquimod, a synthetic Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) agonist, is applied topically to the injection site immediately before vaccination to serve as an immune adjuvant. This combination is designed to enhance immunogenicity and induce seroconversion in populations that are typically hyporesponsive to standard vaccination, such as patients with occult hepatitis B infection (OBI). The regimen was evaluated in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial (NCT03307902) led by The University of Hong Kong.
