Imitrex + Aleve

Imitrex + Aleve refers to the concomitant administration of branded Imitrex (sumatriptan 100 mg) and Aleve (naproxen sodium 440 mg, taken as two 220 mg tablets) as separate tablets for the acute treatment of migraine. This regimen combines two distinct pharmacological mechanisms: sumatriptan is a selective serotonin 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist that causes vasoconstriction of inflamed cranial blood vessels and inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides, while naproxen sodium is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes to reduce the synthesis of inflammatory mediators. This specific combination was utilized as a comparator arm in an open-label, crossover Phase 4 clinical trial conducted by Dr. Stephen H. Landy and funded by GSK to evaluate patient satisfaction compared to the fixed-dose combination tablet Treximet.
