The Inactivated Enterovirus Type 71 Vaccine (Vero Cell) is a monovalent inactivated whole-virus vaccine developed by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products (a subsidiary of Sinopharm) for the prevention of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71). The vaccine is produced by cultivating the EV71 virus in Vero cells, followed by inactivation and adsorption onto an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant. It is administered as a two-dose intramuscular injection series to infants and children, typically aged 6 months to 5 years. Clinical trials, including post-marketing Phase 4 studies conducted in collaboration with organizations like the Beijing Chaoyang District Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, have demonstrated high efficacy (exceeding 90%) in preventing EV71-associated HFMD and significant protection against severe disease. It was one of the first EV71 vaccines to receive regulatory approval in China in late 2015/early 2016.
