Inactivated influenza vaccine (split virion) is a vaccine comprised of highly purified surface and internal antigens from inactivated influenza viruses grown in embryonated chicken eggs. The viral particles are chemically disrupted ("split") to reduce reactogenicity while retaining immunogenic components (mainly haemagglutinin and neuraminidase). The vaccine formulation typically contains antigens from two influenza A subtypes (H1N1, H3N2) and one or two influenza B lineages, conforming to annual WHO recommendations. Upon intramuscular administration, it activates the immune system to produce specific antibodies against the included strains’ haemagglutinins, thereby conferring protective immunity against seasonal influenza infection. The protective effect generally lasts for 6–12 months. It is primarily indicated for annual prophylactic immunization against influenza in children (from 6 months or 6 years, depending on local indications) and adults, including older adults. None of the vaccine's components can cause influenza disease[1][2][3][4][5].
