Inactivated influenza vaccines (surface antigen) are injectable vaccines containing purified and chemically inactivated surface antigens—primarily hemagglutinin and neuraminidase proteins—from selected strains of the influenza virus. These vaccines are designed to induce an immune response by stimulating the production of antibodies against these viral surface antigens, thereby providing protection against infection with circulating seasonal influenza A and B viruses. The primary mechanism of action is the induction of neutralizing antibodies that target hemagglutinin and neuraminidase on the virus surface, preventing viral entry into host cells[5][4][8]. These vaccines are produced using either egg-based or cell-based manufacturing technologies. They are indicated for active immunization to prevent seasonal influenza and are approved for use across various age groups depending on formulation[3][5][8].
