Overview

The inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) is a biologic vaccine used for the prevention of seasonal influenza infection. It contains inactivated influenza antigens, primarily hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, from three specific influenza virus strains: typically two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B lineage. The vaccine's primary mechanism of action is the stimulation of the immune system to produce hemagglutinin-inhibiting antibodies, which neutralize the virus and prevent its attachment to host respiratory cells. Developed by various manufacturers, including **CSL Limited** (under the brand name **Fluvax**), TIV has been studied in diverse populations, including pediatric patients and immunocompromised individuals such as hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients. While trivalent formulations were the standard for many years, they are increasingly being replaced by quadrivalent vaccines that include a second influenza B lineage.
