Overview

The inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) is a seasonal vaccine designed to provide protection against three strains of the influenza virus: two influenza A subtypes (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B lineage. It consists of inactivated (killed) virus particles or purified surface antigens, specifically hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against these viral proteins, thereby preventing infection or reducing the severity of the disease. In clinical trial NCT00479648, this non-adjuvanted formulation served as the active comparator to evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of Seqirus's adjuvanted influenza vaccine candidate, CSL412, in both younger and older adults.
