Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) is a biologic preparation containing inactivated (killed) virus particles from three distinct influenza strains: two Influenza A subtypes (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and one Influenza B lineage. The vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin protein, which prevents viral entry into host cells and reduces the severity of infection. In a landmark Phase 4 trial (IVVE) led by McMaster University and funded by the UK Joint Global Health Trials Scheme and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, a standard-dose TIV provided by Sanofi Pasteur was evaluated for its ability to prevent major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with heart failure. The study, which enrolled over 5,000 participants across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, demonstrated that annual vaccination significantly reduced the risk of pneumonia, hospitalizations, and cardiovascular-related deaths during peak influenza seasons.
