Overview

**Indinavir + zidovudine** is a combination of two antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. Indinavir is a protease inhibitor that inhibits the HIV-1 protease enzyme, thereby preventing the cleavage of viral polyproteins and resulting in the formation of immature, noninfectious viral particles. Zidovudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) which inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme and blocks the conversion of viral RNA to DNA, preventing viral replication. This dual regimen has demonstrated additive antiviral effects, but is less effective and less synergistic than three-drug combinations such as indinavir, zidovudine, and lamivudine[1]. The combination has been investigated in clinical trials for HIV-1, and often forms part of more complex, highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimens.
