Indium (111In) radiolabelled ion exchange resin is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical used in nuclear medicine to evaluate gastrointestinal motility. It typically consists of a cation-exchange resin, such as Amberlite IR-120, which is labeled with the gamma-emitting isotope Indium-111. Because the resin is chemically inert and non-absorbable, it serves as a stable marker for the solid phase of a meal. Following oral administration, the movement of the resin through the stomach, small intestine, and colon is monitored using scintigraphy or SPECT imaging. This allows for the quantitative assessment of gastric emptying, small bowel transit time, and colonic transit, making it a gold-standard tool for diagnosing motility disorders like gastroparesis and chronic constipation.
