Indocyanine green + patent blue-v is a combination of two vital dyes used primarily for intraoperative imaging and mapping of lymphatic structures, most notably in sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) procedures for cancers such as breast cancer and gynecological malignancies. Indocyanine green (ICG) is a water-soluble fluorescent dye that emits near-infrared light when excited by specific wavelengths, allowing real-time visualization of lymphatic flow and nodes using specialized imaging systems. Patent blue V (PBV) is a synthetic dye that stains lymphatic vessels and nodes visibly blue under normal lighting conditions. The combination leverages the high sensitivity of ICG fluorescence with the visual confirmation provided by PBV staining to improve detection rates and accuracy in SLN identification compared to either agent alone[1][5]. Mechanistically, both agents act as inert tracers; they do not target specific molecular pathways but instead travel through the lymphatics after injection at or near tumor sites.
