Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Inersan + doxycycline** is a co-administration regimen evaluated as an adjunct to scaling and root planing for periodontitis. It combines Inersan, an oral probiotic lozenge containing *Lactobacillus brevis* CD2, with oral doxycycline, a tetracycline antibiotic. The probiotic is intended to modulate the oral microbiome and periodontal inflammation through *L. brevis* CD2 activities including arginine deiminase production and antimicrobial effects, while doxycycline suppresses susceptible bacterial protein synthesis through the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit and can inhibit matrix metalloproteinase activity. Clinical studies in aggressive periodontitis found improvement in periodontal measures across probiotic, doxycycline, and combination groups but did not demonstrate a clear synergistic advantage for the combination over either single intervention. A completed Phase 3 study evaluated Inersan and doxycycline in chronic periodontitis. ([pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3616592/))
