Overview

Infliximab and adalimumab are both tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors used in combination therapy for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other inflammatory conditions. Both medications work by binding to TNF-α, a key proinflammatory cytokine involved in chronic inflammatory diseases, thereby blocking its interaction with receptors and reducing inflammation. While they share the same primary mechanism of action, they have structural differences - infliximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody (75% human, 25% murine), while adalimumab is fully humanized. When used in combination, particularly with immunosuppressive drugs like azathioprine, they may provide enhanced efficacy for patients with refractory IBD.
