Overview

This sequential vaccination regimen consists of one dose of an inactivated monovalent H1N1 influenza vaccine (IIV) followed by one dose of a live attenuated monovalent H1N1 influenza vaccine (LAIV). It was evaluated by the University of Rochester in a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT01081639) to study the immune response and safety in children aged 4-9 years during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. The regimen aims to leverage the different immunological pathways of inactivated vaccines, which primarily induce systemic IgG antibodies, and live-attenuated vaccines, which mimic natural infection to stimulate mucosal IgA and cellular immune responses. Both components target the A/California/07/2009 (H1N1) strain.
