Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine live is a live-attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) specifically developed to prevent infection from the pandemic A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) virus. Developed by MedImmune (a subsidiary of AstraZeneca), this vaccine is administered via an intranasal spray and utilizes a cold-adapted, temperature-sensitive master donor virus. This platform allows the vaccine virus to replicate in the cooler environment of the nasopharynx but restricts its growth in the warmer lower respiratory tract, thereby inducing a protective immune response without causing systemic disease. The vaccine elicits both mucosal immunity through IgA production and systemic immunity via T-cell and B-cell activation, mimicking a natural infection. It was authorized for use in individuals aged 2 through 49 years during the 2009 pandemic before the strain was eventually incorporated into seasonal multi-strain vaccines.
