Overview

The influenza A (H1N1) vaccine is an inactivated or live attenuated viral vaccine developed to provide active immunization against the pandemic H1N1 2009 strain of the influenza virus. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies specific to the H1N1 virus hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens. The primary indication is prevention of infection and disease caused by the pandemic H1N1 2009 strain in individuals aged six months and older. Multiple formulations exist including split virion inactivated vaccines for intramuscular injection and live attenuated vaccines for intranasal administration. The development was a global effort involving several major pharmaceutical companies[2][3][5].
