Overview

The influenza A(H1N1) vaccine is an inactivated or live attenuated viral vaccine developed to provide active immunization against the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza virus. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies specific to the hemagglutinin antigen of the H1N1 strain, thereby conferring protection against infection. The primary indication is prevention of disease caused by the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus in individuals aged six months and older. Multiple formulations exist—including inactivated split-virus vaccines for intramuscular injection and live attenuated vaccines for intranasal administration—manufactured using processes similar to those used for seasonal flu vaccines[2][4][5]. Major developers include CSL (now part of CSL Seqirus), Novartis Vaccines (now part of GSK), Sanofi Pasteur, MedImmune/AstraZeneca, and GlaxoSmithKline[6]. The main mechanism is induction of a humoral immune response targeting viral surface antigens.
