The influenza A (H5N1) split virion vaccine is an inactivated, monovalent vaccine designed for active immunization against the influenza A virus H5N1 subtype, commonly known as avian influenza or bird flu. This vaccine is produced by chemically treating and disrupting (splitting) the H5N1 virus particles, which preserves key surface proteins like hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). These proteins act as antigens, stimulating the body's immune system to produce specific antibodies. The presence of these antibodies helps to neutralize the H5N1 virus, thereby protecting vaccinated individuals from developing severe illness upon exposure. Many formulations of this vaccine are adjuvanted, often with substances like AS03 or MF59, to enhance the immune response and allow for dose-sparing. It is primarily indicated for individuals at an increased risk of exposure to the H5N1 virus, including laboratory personnel, veterinary staff, and poultry farmers.
