Overview

An inactivated whole-virion influenza A (H5N1) vaccine developed by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) for the prevention of avian influenza infection. The vaccine is designed to provide immunity against the H5N1 strain, which is considered a significant pandemic threat. Research at HKU has focused on the use of whole-virion formulations, which contain the entire inactivated virus and are generally more immunogenic than split-virion or subunit vaccines, particularly in populations that have not been previously exposed to the virus. Clinical trials conducted by HKU researchers have evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine, including dose-sparing strategies such as intradermal administration using novel microneedle delivery devices like the MicronJet600. These studies aim to determine if lower doses of the vaccine can elicit protective immune responses comparable to standard intramuscular injections, which is a critical consideration for pandemic preparedness and vaccine supply management.
