Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is an inactivated whole-virus monovalent vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to protect against the H5N1 strain of Influenza A, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus with pandemic potential. Unlike split-virus or subunit vaccines, this whole-virus formulation contains the entire inactivated viral particle, which preserves all structural proteins and can potentially enhance immunogenicity. The vaccine was evaluated in clinical trials (such as NCT00309634) in both adjuvanted (using aluminum hydroxide) and non-adjuvanted forms to determine the optimal dose and vaccination schedule for pandemic preparedness in healthy adults.
