Overview
The influenza pandemic (H5) clade 2.1 vaccine (also known as ND1.1) is an investigational oral tablet vaccine developed by Vaxart for the prevention of pandemic influenza caused by H5N1 subtype avian influenza viruses. The vaccine utilizes Vaxart's proprietary oral vaccine platform, which consists of a non-replicating recombinant adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) vector encoding the hemagglutinin (HA) antigen from H5 influenza (clade 2.1, specifically A/Indonesia/05/2005) along with a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) adjuvant that acts as a Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) agonist. Designed as an enteric-coated tablet or capsule, the vaccine is formulated to bypass the stomach and release in the ileum, inducing both systemic and mucosal immune responses (including mucosal IgA and T-cell responses) without the need for injections. It has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials.
