Overview

Influenza vaccine, inactivated, surface antigen is a subunit influenza vaccine composed of purified viral surface glycoproteins, specifically hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Unlike whole-virus or split-virion vaccines, the surface antigen formulation undergoes additional purification steps to remove internal viral proteins and lipids, which is intended to minimize systemic reactogenicity while maintaining immunogenicity. The vaccine functions by stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies against the HA protein, thereby blocking the virus's ability to bind to sialic acid receptors on host epithelial cells and preventing infection. The Complexo Hospitalario Universitario De Santiago has been involved in evaluating the effectiveness of this vaccine type in preventing secondary complications of influenza, such as pneumonia and the exacerbation of underlying cardiorespiratory diseases, particularly in elderly and high-risk populations through large-scale effectiveness studies like GaliFlu.
