Overview

The 2016-2017 influenza vaccine is a seasonal vaccine designed to protect against influenza viruses predicted to be most common during the 2016-2017 flu season. The vaccine was available in both trivalent and quadrivalent formulations. The trivalent vaccines contained antigens from three influenza strains: an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)–like virus, an A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2)–like virus, and a B/Brisbane/60/2008–like virus (Victoria lineage). The quadrivalent vaccines contained the same three antigens plus a B/Phuket/3073/2013–like virus (Yamagata lineage). The composition for 2016-17 represented a change in the influenza A(H3N2) virus and a switch in lineage for the influenza B viruses compared to previous seasons. The vaccine was available in various formulations including standard-dose inactivated, high-dose inactivated, cell culture-based, recombinant, adjuvanted, and live attenuated versions.
