Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The "flu vaccine 2016-2017" refers to the set of inactivated and recombinant vaccines formulated for the prevention of influenza during the 2016–2017 northern hemisphere flu season. These vaccines were designed to protect against four specific strains of influenza virus as recommended by the World Health Organization and U.S. health authorities. The quadrivalent formulations included two type A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and two type B lineages (Victoria and Yamagata). Trivalent versions contained only one B lineage. Most vaccines were inactivated split-virus or subunit types; some used adjuvants like MF59 to enhance immune response in older adults. The primary mechanism is induction of strain-specific neutralizing antibodies against hemagglutinin surface proteins.
