Overview

Flucelvax is a cell culture-derived inactivated influenza vaccine used for active immunization to prevent influenza disease caused by specific subtypes of Influenza A and B viruses contained in the vaccine. It is indicated for use in adults and children from 6 months of age and older. Unlike traditional egg-based flu vaccines, Flucelvax is produced using Madin Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells, which eliminates the risk of egg protein-related allergic reactions[1][2][3][6][8]. The mechanism of action involves inducing humoral antibodies against the haemagglutinin surface antigens present on the included viral strains; these antibodies neutralize circulating influenza viruses[6][8]. The formulation is updated annually to match circulating strains as recommended by public health authorities. Developed and manufactured by Seqirus (a CSL company), it provides an alternative to egg-derived vaccines for individuals with egg allergies or those seeking a non-egg option.
