Overview

Focetria is an MF59-adjuvanted, egg-derived, monovalent influenza A (H1N1) vaccine developed by Novartis to prevent infection during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. The vaccine contains purified surface antigens, specifically hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, from the inactivated A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v-like virus strain. A defining characteristic of Focetria is the inclusion of the MF59C.1 adjuvant, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion that enhances the immune response by recruiting antigen-presenting cells and promoting a broader antibody response. This adjuvanted formulation was particularly designed to improve immunogenicity in populations that typically mount suboptimal responses to standard vaccines, such as the elderly and patients with chronic conditions like end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The vaccine works by inducing hemagglutinin-inhibiting (HI) antibodies that neutralize the influenza virus, preventing its entry into host cells.
