Overview

The H5N1 split virus vaccine is an inactivated, split-virion biologic vaccine designed to provide active immunization against the H5N1 subtype of influenza A virus (avian influenza). The most prominent version, developed by GSK under the brand name Prepandrix, utilizes the proprietary AS03 oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant system to enhance immune response, allowing for a lower dose of the H5 hemagglutinin antigen (3.75 µg). It is indicated for the prevention of H5N1 influenza in adults, particularly in pre-pandemic and pandemic scenarios. Other versions, including non-adjuvanted formulations, have been developed by companies such as Sanofi Pasteur. The vaccine works by stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells.
