Overview

Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) is a vaccine administered as a nasal spray that contains weakened (attenuated) influenza viruses. Unlike inactivated influenza vaccines, LAIV replicates in the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract, mimicking a natural infection to induce a broad immune response, including mucosal IgA, systemic IgG, and cell-mediated immunity. The most widely recognized version is FluMist (known as Fluenz in Europe), which was originally developed by MedImmune and is now part of AstraZeneca's portfolio. It is typically formulated as a quadrivalent vaccine containing two influenza A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B strains (Victoria and Yamagata lineages), with the specific strains updated annually according to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations.
